Mercy Ships Bring Solar Cooking to the Dominican Republic!

Mercy Ships provides medical care, relief aid and training for long-term sustainable change in developing nations. The 265-foot Caribbean Mercy focuses on the Caribbean basin and Central America. Her international crew of 150 volunteers brings hope and healing to the poor.

During the spring of 2003 the Caribbean Mercy called on Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic. As part of this outreach Mercy Ships Community Development Services embarked on a project to distribute solar cookers and train families how to use them. Training was provided to teach people how to make solar panel cookers using cardboard and aluminum foil.

A solar cooking training seminar was conducted at the village Chichigua. This has the benefit of reaching the women of the community. The solar ovens help reduce the cost of fuel used by low-income families.

The Temple Solar Project, of Rotary District 6450, donated 30 GLOBAL SUN OVENS® to Mercy Ships.

The ovens were used to cook rice, chicken, potatoes and other foods that are normally prepared over fires. Use of solar ovens will save families the cost of purchasing wood for fuel, and will also help reduce the problem of deforestation on this small island nation.
