Sun Oven Pre Cooking Cleaning Instructions

When you first open your Sun Oven, and BEFORE YOU START COOKING please follow this procedure.

The first time you use the Sun Oven:

  • Read the Sun Oven Tutorial.
  • Remove the protective film from the reflectors.
  • Set the Sun Oven facing the sun.
  • Close the glass door and turn both latches over the glass. Leave the Sun Oven in this position for 25 to 30 minutes.
  • Using an oven mitt release the latches and open the glass door. Pour 2 cups of water with several drops of dish soap into a pot and place the pot, without a lid, inside the hot Sun Oven and close and latch the glass door.
  • Realign the Sun Oven.
  • Leave the Sun Oven in the sun for 90 to 120 minutes with the open pot of soapy water. Every 30 minutes realign the oven.
  • After the oven has been heated and well steamed completely clean the inside of the chamber and the inside of the glass door with the hot soapy water. While cleaning, it is best to scrub hard on the interior of the glass around the area where the glass meets the black gasket.
  • Now you’re ready to start cooking.

Dual Purpose Leveling Rack

The All American Sun Oven is equipped with a dual purpose leveling rack which hangs from the threaded rods inside the oven and swings freely to prevent spilling. To install the leveling rack bend the side arms outward and place the rack on the threaded rods inside the oven.

The dual purpose leveling rack can also be set on the floor of the Sun Oven to increase the usable area inside the Sun Oven and allow larger pots or pans to be used.

It is important to note that pots and pans should always be placed on the dual purpose leveling rack and never on the floor of the oven. To cook evenly, there must be air flow all the way around the pot. The rack will allow enough air to pass under the pot and ensure an even heat.

Hanging Turkey Roasting Rack

The Hanging Turkey Roasting Rack is designed to accommodate up to an 18 pound turkey in a baking bag. This Rack will replace the equipped dual purpose leveling rack when making turkeys or roasts in a baking bag.

Installation:

1. Remove the dual purpose leveling rack by bending the upper lips toward the center and sliding them off the hanging bolts inside the Sun Oven.

2. When you receive the Hanging Turkey Roasting Rack the side hangers of the Rack will be folded down underneath the main rack. Turn the side hangers upward and hang them on the hanging bolts from which the levelator was removed.

Cleaning instructions: The Hanging Turkey Roasting Rack should be washed in a sink with dishwashing soap. The Rack is NOT dishwasher safe. The side hangers can be easily detached from the main rack for cleaning.

Multi-Fuel Water Pasteurization indicator (WAPI) Instructions

A Water Pasteurization Indicator (WAPI) is a simple thermometer that indicates when water has reached pasteurization temperature and is safe to drink. For many years we offered WAPIs which hang from a nylon cord and work very well in a Sun Oven. During times when there is no sunshine using a WAPI with non-solar fuel was difficult due to the melting of the nylon cord. We are pleased to announce the availability of the Multi-Fuel WAPI, which can be used on a campfire, with charcoal, propane, or with any type of fuel.

Is a WAPI available for my Sun Oven?
Yes, the WAPI is available as an optional add-on for the All American Sun Oven. Exclusively available on Amazon.

How is water Pasteurized?
Pasteurization occurs when water is brought to 65°C (150°F) for 6 minutes.  Pasteurization destroys all microorganisms and dangerous pathogens that cause diseases from drinking contaminated water.

What is a WAPI?
A WAPI is a transparent tube which contains wax.  The wax melts and drops to the bottom of the tube when it reaches 150°F (65°C) for 6 minutes indicating that the water has been pasteurized and is now safe to drink.

What is a Multi Fuel WAPI?
The Multi-Fuel WAPI has been developed for use in a Sun Oven or in a pot over a campfire, with charcoal, propane, or with any type of fuel. The Multi-Fuel WAPI has no delicate nylon line to tangle or burn off dangling over the lip of a kettle. It floats inside the kettle.

The Multi-Fuel WAPI has a high-temperature molded polypropylene case which serves as a carrying case for storage and as a float to enable the WAPI to be submerged in the water.

Water Pasteurization Indicator

In use, the transparent tube is removed from the case and snapped into the hole provided in the bottom, with the wax end up. The case is placed in a pot, pan or jar which is filled with water.  When the wax has dropped to the bottom of the tube, the water is safe to drink. The WAPI can be reused hundreds of times.
